The Old Mill Art Centre 1976
Artist
David G Wilson

Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
"The Old Mill" is one of my early paintings, which I executed on site in July 1976, just before I immigrated to the USA. This old building, which was an old sugar mill, has been transformed into a center for the arts. This was my second version that year; the first having been purchased by Mr. Royston Ellis, an Englishman who was living and working in Dominica. He walked into the Charles Drug Centre (now Jolly's Pharmacy), where I was having my first ever one man show, sponsored by my cousin, Mr. Andy Jolly, and he immediately purchased three paintings, which included the first version of that painting. The other two were "Old Nassief" and "A View of Old Street." Shortly after that first version was painted in April, 1976, the Government began renovating this old building, transforming it into "The Old Mill Art Centre". This version was completed and signed just at the moment that the Premier, later first Prime Minister of Dominica, Mr. Patrick John, was entering for the opening ceremony. Hearing that he was on his way to the ceremony, I actually waited for that moment having finished the painting about half an hour before. Since then, more extensive renovation has been done to the building. In 1982, my late brother, Eddie, submitted this painting for the National Art Competition in Dominica and it was awarded the first prize. David G. Wilson
