Description
My first recollection of seeing professional painting was in the recently destroyed Roman Catholic church at Portsmouth, Dominica, where I grew up. I was drawn to the fourteen paintings of the passion of Christ that were hanging in the church. I suffered many ear wringing episodes because my attention was focused more on the paintings than the prayers that I was supposed to be saying. So, Roman Catholicism and its iconophilia is an integral part of my DNA. Growing up in the Caribbean, specifically Dominica, I would spend twilight hours sitting on the seawall just absorbing the crepuscular hues that fascinated me. I paint them today from memory, since they are so indellibly etched in my mind. In this painting, one sees the combination of my two visual obsessions, Roman Catholic icongraphy and Caribbean crepuscular hues. If you have not seen it yet, then take another look and see the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph blended into the seascape. The revelry on the beach that shows two musicians, creates the face of Christ synonymous with the music that pervades the Caribbean at that time of year.
