Description
This was the brochure for the opening of the Old Mill Cultural Centre in Dominica in 1976. The painting was my first version of that scene executed in April 1976. It was purchased by Mr. Royston Ellis, the very first day of my first one man show at Charles Drug Centre (now Jolly's Pharmacy in Dominica) I subsequently painted a second version because so many people wanted it, but I never sold it and left it with my mom. Another painting that Mr. Ellis bought was OLD Nassief, a store that burned down in 1974. Mr Nassief's wife, Gilda, wanted a version of that painting. I never had the time to complete it. I still have the incomplete canvas somewhere in my home. I was on the way to the airport on my way to the USA in 1976 when she stopped my brother who was driving me to the airport, and asked for the painting. Unfortunately, her painting was never completed. My cousin, Andy Jolly, got the second version which was supposed to have been sold to Mrs. Nassief. I started the third version which was never completed. The third piece that Mr. Ellis bought was "A View of Old Street". I wanted to be the John Constable of Dominica, but Salvador Dali and the Surrealists execised more influence on me after I got to the USA.
