Title
Introspection
Artist
David G Wilson
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Plywood
Description
Yes, it's me. It is an introspective reflection of who I am; an artist obsessed with discovering the source of my inspiration. One who looks deeply within himself to find the true essence of who he is. The result is a reflection, in a mirror, that echoes the anthropomorphic paraphernalia within my studio, all of which are reconfigured to create a self-portrait.
The oval canvas, reflected in the mirror, reveals a self-portrait perched on an easle. There is a table with my palette and brushes; some paint on the palette and a cup with two tubes of paint and brushes spilling over the top. There is also a piece of cloth that I use to wipe my brushes draped over the table. There is a chair whose back can be seen in the foreground and it mimics my beard. Behind the table is a wingback armchair with another towel thrown over its back. Deeper into the painting (illusionary mirror), one may notice another mirror on the back wall, with the sun's light insinuated on the wall. In that mirror, my image is reflected from beyond the parameters of the mirror-painting. It also reflects my back and the chair. The entire painting is designed to resemble a reflection in a bevelled mirror, set into a frame that originally held a mirror. I am standing in front of that painted mirror and I am reflected within it with all of the paraphernalia in my studio. I have actually succeeded in painting a mirror that reflects the essence of who I am - someone obsessed with probing to find the purpose of my being and who I am. I am an artist.

Thanks Barbara, but it really IS a mirror that reflects the paraphernalia in my studio. Collectively these images reflected in a mirror depict a self-portrait that shows the viewer an introspective view of who and what I am.

David thank you so much for your comment. I just viewed your works and I like them all, however this piece reminds me of the gospel song- 'I'm to close to the mirror to see what you see'. I love the song and I truly love this piece.
