Description
Although many in the Western World may be reluctant to admit it, the influence of African art and music has impacted much of modern music, art and dance. We see the African influence in the works of Matisse, Picasso, Derain, Modigliani, Braque, Kirshner and most of the European artists who are credited with the modern art of the Western World in the 20th century. These artists not only admitted the effect of African art on their work, but also collected African art yet Africa and Africans get little credit.
Musically, the influence from Africa and the African diaspora is undeniable. If we start with Scott Joplin's Ragtime and proceed to Jazz, Swing, Beebop, Rock & Roll
R & B, Pop, Soul, Disco, Rap, Reggae, Calypso, Soca, Merengüe, Salsa, Compas, Zouk, Soucoose and the Samba music from Brazil and too many more to mention, We may even extend it to dance, when The Stick dance, Texas Tommy, Patting juba, the Lindy hop, Stepping, Tango, Jitterbug, Cakewalk, Shuffle Along, Charleston, Moonwalk, Split, Funky Chicken, Marsh Potato, The Twist, Break dancing, Limbo dance, Electric Slide, Wind and many more, So, can anyone deny that African music and art and dance have influenced the culture of the 20th century?
In this painting, I have again endeavored to depict the reductive equation of African people to chattel (objects to be bought and sold) in spite of the irrefutable visual presence of their humanity and their cultural contributions to the Western World.
Sadly, Western Art world gives credit to Cezanne for Picasso's sharp edged disintegration and reassembly of form while giving marginal credit to African art although all the European appropriators acknowledge their debt to African art. So, I choose to disintegrate the human form, not merely to appropriate Picasso's modus operandi, but to show the physical and mental disintegration that slavery and colonialism imposed on African people and also the reductive equation to chattel.
