Description
I got this story when I was reading the back of a comic book in 1981. There had been an unsuccessful attempt on President Reagan's life and the story shocked me. It revealed that since 1840, every president elected in a year that ended with a zero had died suddenly in office. I researched the story and discovered that it was true. Their election was in cycles of twenty (20) years beginning in 1840 when President William H. Harrison was elected. He died of pneumonia thirty-one (31) days after his inauguration. Twenty years later in 1860, the cycle continued with Abraham Lincoln was elected. History repeated itself. In 1880, President James Garfield was elected and he was shot and killed eight (8) months later. In 1900, President William McKinley was elected. He too was shot and killed in 1901 while still in office. Then in 1920, Warren Harding was elected and died in office in 1923. President Franklin D Roosevelt was elected in 1940 and died in his fourth term in office. Then came 1960, when John F. Kennedy was elected and we all know what happened.
So in 1981, when the attempt was made on the life of President Reagan, who was elected in 1980, twenty years after President Kennedy, I was shocked that I was a witness to history continuing to repeat itself. Thankfully, he survived and successfully completed his terms in office. Hopefully the cycle is complete having taken seven presidents.
In 1981, I was terribly disappointed at the repatriation of Pablo Picasso's "Guernica" to Spain. I had enjoyed its presence in New York and it was no longer going to be here where I could always go and visit. I decided that I had to paint an American epic, large enough to replace Guernica. I executed this large painting in three months. It measures 5' 10" x 21' 9".
I hope that the cycle remains permanently ended.

Thank you for your comment on my photo. After going through your gallery, I am amazed at your creations. Now I see how you were able to spot the profile and crown in my photo. You transform multiple objects to create a vision that comes to life when viewed as a whole. You see things that others cannot. What a true gift and amazing way to present a subject. The story behind this painting really made it stand out. I like to know why things are created, what inspired the artist. Thank you for sharing in such a unique way.

Hello David. Thank you for your kind comment. Painting 9 was a comissioned work and the idea was not my own so I donīt really deserve the credit. It is indeed an interesting and fascinating motive. Congratulations to your work. This painting and the Celebration of Kingīs dreams are my favourites. You put a lot of thought into your work - thatīs good. Keep it up. Ingrid.
