Title
The Wrath of Brabantio
Artist
David G Wilson
Medium
Painting - Acrylic On Canvas
Description
Act 1, Scene 1 Iago calls out to Brabantio, "The devil will make a grandsire of you" Later, he exclaims, "Your daughter and the Moor are making the beast with two backs." It is the later scene that I have tried to portray here. Shakespeare places the Moor, Othello, in bed with his wife, Desdemona. It is an unusual scene since such a scene was taboo and inconceivable in the racial climate of the sixteenth/seventeenth century. I wonder whether Brabantio's alleged anger was actually that of Shakespeare, projected onto Brabantio. So, I have portrayed Shakespeare as Brabantio penning the death warrant of Othello since his transgression of miscegenation was punishable by death during slavery days. (c) David G. Wilson
