Description
This painting is based on the song that was written by a Jewish teacher, Abel Meeropol, from the Bronx, NY, and performed by Billy Holiday. It was entitled "Strange Fruit" and it dealt with the lynching of Black men in the South. Mr. Meeropol said that the first time that he saw a photograph of a lynching, he was quite disturbed by the image, because it looked like a fruit hanging from a tree only that it painted a macabre and diabolic image of man's inhumanity to man. The song was considered very provocative and contravertial then. However, the song was eventually listed as one of the top songs of the 20th Century. David G. Wilson
