Description
This scene represents the harbor of my hometown, Portsmouth, in my native Commonwealth of Dominica. The view is looking south towards Morne Espagnol. The ubiquitous boats, mountains and coconut trees in this harbor, Grand Anse (French for "large Bay") with its radiant crepuscular light, emerge from that which was etched in my memory from childhood. This bay is called Prince Rupert's Bay. To the south, one may see Morne Espaol and the plateau of Point Round. Since my childhood inthat town, I always perceived the visual juxtaposition of the two geographic features as a hat. The boats that can always be seen in that harbour are strategically placed to create the semblance of facial characteristics. It is also convenient that the entire bay is lined with coconut trees whose long stems not only delineate the face, but whose leaves mimic human hair. Sitting on the sea walls in Portsmouth, enjoying the beautiful crepuscular light would transport me to dimensions yet uncharted, which I now invoke and incorporate in my art. David G. Wilson
