Title
Celebration of a KING s Dream EBONY and IVORY
Artist
David G Wilson
Medium
Painting - Oil On Canvas
Description
This is my largest painting to date. It measures 9' 2" x 16' 1" It was executed in 1985 after President Reagan announced that Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday would henceforth be a national holiday. This was my tribute to Dr.King.
It features Stevie Wonder and Paul Mc Cartney performing their hit song, Ebony & Ivory. That song epitomized what Dr. King s "I Have a Dream" speech meant. On the left side of the painting, one can see Michael Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Andrew Young, Rev Ralph Abernathy, Mrs. Coretta Scott King and Tony Bennett. These were people who were active in the Civil Rights Movement. On the right side, one may see Cindy Lopper, Bob Geldoff who started the LiveAid program, Lionel Richie, Hall & Oates, Jessie Jackson, Bishop Tutu and Bruce Springstein. These were people who participated in a movement (LiveAid) to save humanity (The starving people of Ethiopia), an undertaking that REALLY epitomized Dr. King's dream of America and the world. It was the first time that I had seen a multi-racial group band together to do such a wonderful deed for the sake of humanity- "We Are The World". I squeezed myself into the lower left corner. In the center, there is a break dancer whirling around on one arm and amid all of the celebration, one sees Dr. King making an appearance with a smile to see that America was finally hidding his message.
I began this large painting on June 26th, 1985 and completed and signed it on the anniversary of Dr. King's "I Have A Dream" speech August 28th 1985.

Dear David, This is first time viewing this phenomemal large and amazing painting. The details are so fine. It must have taken you a few days or months? I don't expect you to answer tha if you do not wish to do so.. I know that fine artists such as you prob. get tired of people asking "Wow, how long did it take to paint that?" Also this is an outstanding tribute. :Your new admirer, aew
David G Wilson replied:
Hello Ms. Whiteway, I must apologize for not responding in a timely manner. I never noticed your question. So, please accept my apology. This painting took two (2) months and two (2) days. I started work on it on June 26th, 1985 and affixed my signature to it on August 28th, 1985. I timed the completion to coincide with the twenty second anniversary of Dr. King's, "I Have A Dream" speech. It was a dutiful tribute to one of my greatest heroes whose death on that Thursday afternoon, April 4th, 1968 coincided with my mom's 57th birthday. I was in my second year at high school and never forgot that mournful evening when the news reached us in the Caribbean.
