Description
This is another painting inspired by Leonardo's suggestion that "the artist who wishes to enhance his faculties for creative invention can look at a stain on the wall and therein he shall perceive whatever he wishes to see". I wanted to apply the technique to the work of another renaissance master and so I applied it to one of my all time favorites at the National Gallery of Art in Washington D C. It is Raffaello Sanzio's "Alba Madonna" For a greater appreciation, compare this painting to Raphael's piece in the National Gallery of Art. Here, one sees the Madonna and Child with St John, the Baptist. The landscape is a typical Dominican scene (Commonwealth of Dominica; NOT Dominican Republic) replete with mountains and craggy cliffs, rivers and choppy seas juxtaposed with calmer waters on the other side of the isthmus (The scene is reversed - Scottshead) . The ubiquitous boats moored in the bay that form the facial features of the Madonna represents none other than my beloved mother and her two sons. The face of the Baptist is configured by a boy playing frisbee with his dog. The face of the Christchild is configured by a little girl mischieveously trying to thwart flying birds from the sky. In his right hand, he holds the church which is linked to the telephone pole (his cross) by telephone wires communicating to his flock the tenets of Christianity and forgiveness for the transgression of the little girl. The Holy Spirit is a bird taking a refreshment break to drink water from a tree trunk.
